Leading with Emotional Intelligence in Aix-en-Provence
I have recently returned from the University Aix-Marseilles in France
(http://www.univ-cezanne.fr/index.php?id=923) where I presented an elective seminar to 24 MBA students on the topic of “Leading with Emotional Intelligence”. My work as a Psychologist working in Organisational Development provided me with this wonderful international opportunity. It was a delight to work with such motivated enthusiastic young people. I also found meeting the other international presenters fascinating.
Aix-en-Provence is such a pretty town, with very friendly people and divine French food and wine to enjoy all day!
Emotional Intelligence is the study of self-awareness of our own- and others -feelings, and the ability to re-frame difficult situations to enhance your resilience and positive thinking. There is a great article here http://www.forbes.com/sites/danschawbel/2011/09/15/daniel-goleman-on-leadership-and-the-power-of-emotional-intelligence/ if you wish to explore this topic in further detail.
Co-incidentally I had a great opportunity to practise my re-framing on my return home. The plane had taxiied out to the tarmac for take-off where we sat for over 4 hours while a technical fault was identified. Others in the plane were complaining and stressing out. I thought to myself: I don’t have control over this situation, but I did have a cinema screen in front of me. So I imagined I was not in a plane, but in a movie cinema, where I could select from over 60 movies. Two movies later and we were on our way!
